Introduction

The prevalence of stroke and brain injuries continues to increase each year. There often are long-lasting sequelae from these injuries including physical, cognitive, language, and behavioral deficits. The focus of this course is to provide clinicians with a “hands-on” experience, including acute bedside rehabilitation, efficient and effective body mechanics, spasticity assessment and treatment, disorders of consciousness, behavior management, perceptual deficits, cognitive impairments, medical complications after stroke/brain injury, and more. This course will emphasize an integrative treatment approach for stroke and brain injury by combining various styles of neuro-acupuncture and evidence-based rehabilitation. Clinicians will be more effective and efficient practitioners by integrating techniques covered in this course. The material will be presented via an interactive didactic course format. In addition, discussion and active participation in case presentations/patient demonstrations related to clinical practice will engage the audience. You will gain an increased appreciation and confidence of effective treatment that can help your clients’ recovery of function.

This course is directly related to the practice of medical neurology, acupuncture, and selective healthcare professionals who directly work with stroke or brain injury patients.

Course Highlights

  • Learn how to “WOW” your patient with stroke/ TBI within 5 minutes of the first visit!

  • Compare various styles of scalp and body acupuncture that benefit stroke and brain injury patients, including Zhu’s, Jiao’s, and International standard.

  • “Hands-on” rehabilitation strategies for acupuncturists and all clinicians in different care settings, including acute hospital, sub-acute rehabilitation, and outpatient.

  • Evidence-based plan of care protocols from assessment to discharge.

  • Learn the most efficient body mechanics and manual techniques to transfer and ambulate neurological patients. Maximize clinical outcomes with minimal weight on practitioners.

  • Guidelines to recommend appropriate assistive devices for stroke patients.

  • Best rehabilitation techniques for neurological disorders, such as Bobath NDT (Neuro-developmental Therapy), Brunnstrom and PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation).

  • Latest unique therapy interventions include locomotor training, activities of daily living, and balance training.

  • Learn from an instructor who has been working with 15-20 stroke and TBI patients daily for 27 years in hospital ICUs, sub-acute rehabilitation, and outpatient cash-pay practices.

  • ALL proven treatment strategies and protocols in your everyday practice, not just theories from books.

  • Unlock the power of transformation with our groundbreaking “Neuro-Acupuncture Reactivation Techniques”. Getting the paralyzed limbs to move again. The miracles that your patients have been long waiting for!

Course Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to recognize the neuroanatomy factors that influence treatment, prognosis, and medical complications after stroke and brain injury.

  2. Participants will distinguish special clinical presentations after stroke and/or brain injury (i.e. flaccidity, dysphagia, dysphasia, visual deficit, neurobehavioral disorders, the synergistic walking, apraxia and the effects of bowel and bladder impairment) and construct treatment plans to facilitate recovery.

  3. Participants will understand the advantages of different neuro-acupuncture techniques for stroke and brain injuries and select the best approaches to achieve the optimal outcome.

  4. Participants will be able to identify at least three evidence-based rehabilitation interventions for the most common impairments and limitations in the acute, sub-acute and chronic phases of stroke/TBI.

  5. Participants will be able to utilize the most effective manual techniques and body mechanics to facilitate proper functional mobility and correct compensatory movements.

  6. Participants will be able to differentiate the levels of care and appropriate management across the continuum of care for persons with stroke and TBI.

  7. Participants will use verbal and manual cues to facilitate components of movement of the trunk and extremities required for upper limb activities, bed mobility, transfers, and walking.

  8. Participants will understand special clinical presentations after brain injury and/or stroke (i.e. left/right neglect, pusher syndrome, attention and memory, locked-in syndrome, vocational barriers) and construct treatment plans to facilitate recovery.

Courses are devised into 3 parts/days.
All courses include lectures and hands-on labs

  • PART 1: Neuro-acupuncture protocols and rehabilitation strategies for stroke and TBI in acute and sub-acute stages.

  • PART 2: Neuro-acupuncture protocols and rehabilitation strategies for stroke and TBI in chronic stage (Trunk and lower extremities)

  • PART 3: Neuro-acupuncture protocols and rehabilitation strategies for stroke and TBI in chronic stage (Upper extremities and speech/ cognition/ memory)
